Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a leading supplier of agricultural commodities such as corn, oats, soybeans and barley, but there are many other crops that grow surprisingly well, despite the region’s infamous cold winter climate.

When it comes to small-scale local growing in places like Keeler Hill, one of the best options is to start the season by picking up some small starter plants at a nearby nursery such as the Sweet Pea Farm in Paynesville.

There, you can find a wide variety of delicious and beautiful crops, ready for planting at incredibly impressive prices.

Opening Day was May 17th this year, so we made sure to stop by in the morning to pick up some peppers, tomatoes, squash, melons, flowers and herbs.

What a great way to support local while also increasing the amount of homegrown food in the area!
